Latin American Jewish Culture
Oral Presentations Guidelines
(This assignment accounts for 10% of your total class grade)
Topic: Any Latin American or US Latino cultural text (artwork, literature, film, documentaries, children's literature, comics, graffiti, and so forth) dealing with the Latin American Jewish Diaspora. NOTE: You can use the same topic for your term paper and the oral presentation.
Length: 12-15 minutes
Grading criteria:
1. Handout: 15%
a. The handout must include expanded information to complement your oral presentation. It must include a short bibliography of primary and secondary sources. Please distribute printed copies to your classmates before the presentation.
2. Content: 50%
It must address the following topics/questions:
- A brief introduction where you speak about the author, the work’s content (plot or film summary, for instance).
- Analysis where you explain relevant narrative, lyrical or cinematic techniques: e.g. chronology (linear or fragmented), characteristics of the narrative voice(s), basic conflict, whose story it is.
- A selection of answers to the following questions, as they apply to the text you study:

i. Why can we label (or not) this novel or short story as Jewish literature?
ii. What is the historical context of the text?
iii. Does the novel subvert, revise, question or validate traditional values? Defend your answer.
iv. Why did the author write the novel or short story?
v. How are sexual/gender roles assigned?
vi. Does the novel (or short story) present examples of cultural assimilation and/or cultural adaptation? Expand your answer.
vii. How does the literary work define Jewish identity vs. National identity?
viii. What role–if any–does religion play?
ix. Are there any ethnic values present?
3. Delivery: 20%
a. You will be graded on how engaging and interesting, fluent and expressive you seem to the audience and how you tailored your presentation to the audience for the intended purpose of informing, interesting or persuading.
4) Visual Aids: 15%
a) The visual aids must help to make the theme more visually appealing and to reinforce the presentation’s content.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS CALENDAR: The presentation’s date will be assigned by the luck of the draw. We will pick numbers in class.
