Preguntas fundamentales para análisis de cuentos y novelas¹

1. ¿De qué trata este cuento?

2. ¿Esta narrativa relata la historia de quién?

3. ¿Cuál es el conflicto básico? ¿Hay metáforas de este conflicto?

4. ¿Cuál es el verbo fundamental (frase nuclear) que se desarrolla en la trama (récit, relato)? Es decir, en una frase, ¿qué ocurre en este cuento?

5. ¿Cómo es la posición del narrador? ¿Está fuera o dentro del récit? ¿Qué efectos produce la posición del narrador? ¿Cuáles son los límites de su conocimiento u omnisciencia?

6. ¿Cómo es la focalización? ¿De quién es el ojo que ve, en el récit?

7. ¿Cuál es la diferencia básica entre la histoire (historia, fábula, anécdota) y el récit (trama desarrollada, relato)?

A ¿Cuándo y cómo se inicia el récit? ¿En qué momento de la histoire empieza el récit?

B.¿Cuál es la importancia de la anacronía (flashback o flashforward, mediante cambio de cronología o mediante recuerdo/anticipación) en la expansión del verbo fundamental?

C ¿Hay un marco? Es decir, se explica cuál es la excusa que se utiliza para contar el cuento.

8. ¿Se relaciona el cuento con el contexto social/cultural? ¿Cómo?

9. ¿Cómo se caracterizan los personajes? ¿Sus acciones, las descripciones de otros personajes, una lista provista por el narrador, etc?

Basic Questions for Analyzing Short Stories and Novels

1. What does the story refer to? (Facts, knowledge, and attitudes that the author draws on for his story material.)

2. Whose story is it? (Answer by saying "This narrative is really the story of X." Then ask yourself if your answer is justified by the conflict and its development in the plot.)

3. What is the conflict on which the plot is based? ("Conflict" refers to the central problem that is developed in the story.)

4. In one sentence, express what happens in the story?

5. Where is the narrator? (Inside or outside the plot; participating or not participating in the action.)

6. From what point of view do we see what happens? (Ask yourself if the voice that is narrating and the eye that is seeing both belong to the same person.)

7. a. At what point in the story does the plot begin? (Think of all the events in chronological order. Does the author change the order? With what effect? Is there an "introduction" preceding the first action?)

8. ¿What cultural codes are present in the story?

9 ¿How are characters developed? (By their actions, other characters descriptions, a list provided by the narrator, etc?
