“REEL GUATE”: THE 18TH LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL
“Reel Guate:” Louisville’s XVII Latin American Film Festival gives voice to a group of contemporary Guatemalan filmmakers working with the diverse genres of short films, feature films and documentaries to focus on the issues of Guatemala today. The films explore real issues of Guatemala current society with a focus on the urban landscape and experience. The title of the event, “Reel Guate” plays on the words “reel” (sounds like Real) and “Guate,” as Guatemalans affectively refer to their country.
The list of movies includes ten (10) feature length films and (6) five short films. The film festival begins Wednesday, September 14, 2011 and runs through October 2, 2011. A special reception will be held on the opening night, September 15, at 6:00 p.m. in the Elaine Chao Auditorium. Film Director Julio Hernández will be in attendance. Immediately following the reception, there will be a screening of Hernández’ work, Marimbas del infierno/Marimbas from Hell. Mario Rosales, director of El regreso de Lencho, that will be exhibited on Friday, September 23, will visit Louisville that weekend. Actor and Film editor Domingo Lemus who stars in Puro Mula will be present at the festival from September 29 – October 1. The fIlm director of Prohibido vender rosas and Aquó me quedo will also attend the festival on the last week.
The Spanish Section of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages from the University of Louisville, Al Dóa en América, Louisville first Spanish’s newspaper, Bellarmine University, Murray State University, Luis de León, and the Guatemalan community in Kentuckiana have collaborated to bring these original films to the area. Because of the timely issues explored by these movies and thanks to the generosity of directors and the sponsors, “Reel Guate” has managed to showcase these films free to the public. To include as many members of the community as possible, we have arranged to show the films at the University of Louisville’s Belknap campus, Bellarmine University campus and the Speed Art Museum.
