The Department of Classical and Modern Languages and the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisville, proudly announce the 32nd edition of the “Reel” Latin America(n) Film Festival, a celebration that has brought the voices of Spanish and Latin American cinema to our community for more than three decades.
The festival’s title, “Reel,” plays on both the material history of film reels and the presentation of real stories—authentic narratives that reveal the resilience, struggles, and aspirations of communities across Latin America and Spain. In 2025, the program expands its scope with the inclusion of Chinas (Spain), renewing the festival’s commitment to exploring transatlantic connections and shared cultural challenges within the Spanish-speaking world.
The theme for this year, Resilience and Belonging: Voices from the Margins, underscores films that explore identity, community, and transformation. Each work offers a distinct perspective while engaging universal questions of memory, justice, and cultural survival, inviting audiences to reflect on the evolving dynamics of culture and belonging.
All screenings are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.
Screenings will take place in two campus venues: the Floyd Theater at the Student Activities Center and Chao Auditorium in Ekstrom Library. Films are scheduled in both evening and midday slots, providing opportunities for students, faculty, and community members to attend at convenient times.
Each film includes a pre-screening introduction by a faculty member or invited guest to provide cultural and cinematic context, followed by a post-screening discussion that encourages dialogue, reflection, and exchange of ideas among audience members. These conversations are a hallmark of the festival, creating a welcoming space for deeper engagement with the themes and issues raised on screen.
